How big is a marla in Gujrat — 225 or 272 sq ft? A clear guide to plot sizes, what fits on each, and how to choose between 3, 5, 7 and 10 Marla for your family.
"Marla" is the word every Pakistani buyer knows and almost nobody measures. In Gujrat that matters, because the same "5 marla" can mean two different sizes.
How many square feet is a marla in Gujrat?
The Punjab Private Housing Schemes Rules 2022 define a marla as 225 sq ft in Lahore district and 272 sq ft in all other districts, which includes Gujrat (LG Punjab compendium). Some other bodies use 225 sq ft (for example, DHA bylaws), and the traditional revenue figure is 272.25 sq ft.
So always ask the society which figure it uses, and make sure the square footage is written on your allotment.

What fits on each size?
Typical outcomes for a family home (actual layouts depend on the society's building bylaws, setbacks and the plot's frontage):
- 3 Marla: a compact double-storey home, usually 2–3 bedrooms. The most affordable way to own a house, or a smart first investment.
- 5 Marla: the classic Pakistani family home. A double-storey with 3–4 bedrooms, a small car porch and a lounge.
- 7 Marla: the sweet spot for many families, with room for 4–5 bedrooms, a proper drawing room and a wider front.
- 10 Marla: space to build the house you've pictured: separate family and guest areas, a lawn, and room for parents to live with you.
How to choose
Ask three questions:
- Who will live there in ten years? Parents moving in, or children marrying and staying, can make a 7 or 10 marla plot the cheaper choice in the long run.
- Will you build soon, or hold? If you're investing for now and building later, a smaller plot keeps installments light.
- What's the frontage? Two plots of the same marla can feel very different. A wider front gives better light, parking and design freedom.
